If you’re not familiar with Algeria…here’s some stats:
Size: about a quarter the size of Texas
Religion: Mainly Islam…less than 3% Christian
It is dangerous to be a Christian…and even more dangerous to print or distribute Christian material (Bibles).
There IS something you can do…it’s free…can be done from the comfort of your computer…and it takes about 2 min. Sound easy?
In March 2006,the Algerian government introduced new legislation that redefined the conditions for exercising religious activities outside of Islam. Since November 2007, 26 of the 52 known Algerian churches have been ordered to close. Many churches that attempt to register in accordance with this new law are often denied applications by the government with little or no explanation. Send an email to the Algerian Ambassador today, asking the Algerian government to stop the church closures!
The government fears that the growth of religious minorities within Algeria will allow foreign powers to interfere with Algeria’s internal affairs. Authorities have begun comparing Christianity with terrorism, and reports encourage Muslim schools and mosques to counter this “dangerous” Christian evangelism. As the number of church closures rises and more are encouraged to fight Christianity, the Algerian church risks becoming extinct. Read more>>

Thanks for the work you’re doing with this blog. I’ve linked to this post at my blog, The Enduring Church at http://enduringchurch.wordpress.com/2008/06/12/the-disappearing-church-in-algeria/.

With all the respect to your Faith and Knowledge,
it is nothing against Christianity as Faith or its fellows what ever so it taking right now in Algeria which is my Country, but simply a reply and protest and fight against the evangelicals who are trying to do what they already done with lot of places around the world by forcing and manipulating people against their own free will and get them to be Christians. it is as simple as you can read it or hear it. so, please you do not know what it is going on now in Algeria and how Algerians treat the Christians because we have been having Christianity since Jesus PBUH was sent by God on earth as a messenger OK. and if you do not know that, go and learn about those who made the history and are Algerians and Christians in the same time. therefor the matter is purely political and a conspiracy that is taking place in Algeria, tho really destabilize the country and its religion which is Islam all that within its citizens whom they are truly devoted to their Faith..Islam.
and also the matter is really grave because religion is about love and compassion not about spying or conspiring against others by brainwashing the weak to the point were it comes to get them busy with worldly living (materialism) raider than showing the sharing for the real spirituality, and control them later like a slave living against their own free will
although for your knowledge in Algeria we do have beside Muslims a Christian living whom are Algerians and non Algerians and they have churches were you find them open freely for they worship with lot of respect and compassion among thy Algerians.
sincerely.
mohamed, why do we protest against anything or law that makes it difficult to preach your islam in western countries. why do we do we limit the efforts of christians to preach their religion. i’m an algerian and i say there is no freedom of religion.
in the civil right code one could be disinherited and his marriage to be dissolved to denounce Islam.
there are new regulations against prolesizing and intending to shake a muslims’ faith to other faiths from 5 to 10 years of prison and a fine of up to 10 million Algerian dinars
and there is a case these days agaist three christian young man being convicted of offense to the prophet.
this could go to up to ten years of prison.
what if i say islam or the koran has some viollent verses, would a muslim consider it an offense? absolutely, so this law should instead be written blatantly to say there is no right to be who you are other than a muslim. live alone or kill yourself…

Hello, Im a guy from Malta & like all maltese I am roman catholic.
I think the Algerian government should stop persecuting christians; and Im not saying this because I want to enforce christianity or something. Matter of fact, I hate religious persecution. For example, in the 1990s serbian muslims were being persecuted by the serbian orthodox majority, and I resent that.
Basically, countries should stop forcing religous minorties to convert to the major religion, unless they want to do so by freewill.
[...] Open Doors has a great entry on the condition of the church in Algeria, and what you can do about it. Essentially, Christian churches all across the country have been ordered to close. [...]
I write from Pro-life World Congress which principle task is to defend life of innocent children that are in danger while the civilization of death is spreading around the world
Last year, in november we organised a World Congress in which participated members of pro-life organizations from many countries and we put ourselves to the task of trying to evaluate the most important achievement of them all: the number of lives saved directly by the social work of prolife associations in the whole world.
To achive our goal we need to know people from each country that could provide us statistics from their countries.
In connection with that my question is whether in Ghana exist any pro-life organizations or at least people that are dedicated to this matter. We also look for the same organizations or people from other african countries.
We would be very grateful for any information and help.
Yours in Christ,
Marcin Iwanowski

I think changes within a country regarding religion have to start at the grass roots level with the people themselves. From their point of view foreign interventionists destabilize the laws of the land, as the Romans interfered with ancient Judea. We all know how that ended up. Religion and politics will always be at odds & what’s to say our secular view on Religion is any better than the Algerian view of an Islamic state. Christianity is back in force in former USSR it was done pretty well by the people.
I loves Lord with my heart, soul and mind.

Hi there
God has also given me a love for algeria and to pray for the country and its people. I do not live in Algeria and I am not a pastor, but I am asking for God to build his church with his love and grace.
I pray that Jesus will sustain you and bless you always in your love for him.
